Distribution: Occurring in scattered localities on both sides of the Cascades in Washington; British Columbia to Oregon, east to Montana; widely distributed in eastern North America.

Habitat: Uncommon garden escape of moist areas, lake and pond margins, and riparian zones.

Flowers: June-August

Origin: Introduced from Europe

Growth Duration: Perennial

Conservation Status: Not of concern

Pollination: Self-pollination, bees, flies

Description:
General:

Erect, downy-pubescent herbs, the flowering stems 3-10 dm. tall.

Leaves:

Leaves in whorls of 2-4, short-petiolate, broadly lanceolate, often black-dotted.

Flowers:

Flowers in axillary racemes, on long pedicels; calyx divided nearly to the base, the 5 lobes red-margined; corolla yellow, rotate, 15-20 mm. across; stamens 5, exerted, opposite the corolla lobes.

Fruits:

Capsule opening by valves.
