Distribution: Occurring in scattered localities on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to Oregon, east to Montana; scattered throughout central and eastern North America.
Habitat: Old fields, roadsides and stream banks.

Erect, glabrous, perennial herbs from rhizomes, the stems simple, 1.5-10 dm. tall, pubescent, and with a few stalked glands.
Leaves whorled, on petioles 0.5-1.6 cm. long; leaf blades lanceolate to ovate, 5-10 cm. long and 1-4 cm. wide, the base rounded, the tip acute; leaf surfaces densely pubescent, with stalked glands and reddish spots.
Flowers 1 or more in the leaf axils, on pubescent pedicles 1-3.5 cm. long; sepals 5, narrowly lanceolate, 5-8 mm. long; petals 5, yellow, widely spreading, 12-20 mm. long, the margins entire, the tip acute to rounded; stamens 5, the filaments united for the lower 2-2.5 mm., shorter than the petals.
Capsule 4-5.5 mm. long, with dark reddish spots, glabrous.
