Distribution: Occurring chiefly east of the Cascades crest in Washington mostly from Mt. Adams south, though a historical record is known from Yakima County; south-central Washington to the Sierra Nevada of California.
Habitat: In woods, meadows and moist open slopes at mid-elevations in the mountains.

Deciduous shrub 6-15 dm. tall.
Leaves opposite, short-petiolate, elliptic or rhombic to broadly ovate, 2.5-7.5 cm. long and 1.5-4.5 cm. broad, stiff-hairy beneath and often above as well.
Flowers in pairs on axillary peduncles 1-4.5 cm. long; corolla united, dark reddish-purple, 8-11 mm. long, deeply two-lipped, the upper lip shallowly 4-lobed, the lower narrow and entire; corolla tube shorter than the lips, strongly swollen on the lower side, conspicuously long-hairy within; stamens 5, the filaments long-hairy below; ovary 3-celled, inferior.
Fruit a reddish-black berry nearly 1 cm. thick
