Distribution: Occurring in or near forested areas on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to Oregon, east to Montana.

Habitat: Open to rather dense woods, low to mid-elevations in the mountains.

Twining vines, sometimes climbing to 6 m., with hollow twigs that are glaucous when young.

Leaves opposite, glabrous except for a few marginal hairs, strongly glaucous beneath, sub-sessile, broadly elliptic, 4-10 cm. long and 2-5.5 cm. wide, one or more of the pairs at the end of each twig grown together at the base.

Flowers in a dense, short, terminal inflorescence; corolla orange, 2.5-4 cm. long, somewhat two-lipped, the tube 3 or 4 times as long as the lips, swollen on one side above the base; stamens 5, glabrous; ovary 3-celled, inferior.

Fruit a red berry nearly 1 cm. thick.
