Distribution: From Alaska south to northern California, east to western Montana
Habitat: Moist riparian forest.
Substrate: On bark of conifers and hardwoods, especially Populus balsamifera.
Conservation Status: Not of concern
Foliose, the lobes several centimeters across; upper surface gray or brownish gray; lower surface pale brown to whitish, strongly tomentose.
Soredia present in round soralia on surface and margin of thallus; apothecia uncommon, reddish-orange.
cortex K+yellow; other tests negative.
