Distribution: Widely distributed in forested and mountainous areas on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Alaska to California, east in North America to the Atlantic Coast; circumboreal.

Habitat: Open forest, forest edges, and peatlands from low elevations to the alpine.

Creeping, evergreen herbs, the trailing stems elongate and somewhat hairy and woody, from which arise numerous, erect, leafy, flowering stems up to 10 cm. long.

Leaves opposite, short-petiolate, firm, broadly elliptic to sub-rotund, usually with a few shallow teeth, 7-25 mm. long and 5-15 mm. wide, glabrous to long-hairy.

Flowers in pairs on pedicels 1-2.5 cm. long, at the end of long, naked peduncles, nodding; calyx 5-lobed, 2-5 mm. long; corolla pinkish, funnel-shaped, 9-16 mm. long, the tube slender, the 5 lobes flaring; stamens 4, 2 shorter than the other 2; style elongate; ovary inferior.

Fruit small, dry, unequally 3-celled.
