Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east across most of North America to the Atlantic Coast.

Habitat: Disturbed, open soil, often where moist near ponds, lakes, and streams, from low to middle elevations.

Flowers: May-October

Description:
General:

Plants annual, erect to ascending, sometimes lax, capable of rooting at the nodes; stems 2-40 cm tall.

Leaves:

Leaves opposite, simple, cauline, petiolate; blades lanceolate to spatulate, sometimes palmately 3-5 veined, otherwise single midvein.

Flowers:

Flowers white with tinge of purple-pink or blue near throat; corolla fused, bilabiate, ovary superior; some flowers not opening (cleistogamous); stamens 2.

Fruits:

Fruit a capsule; seeds yellow to gold, 6-angled.
