Habitat: Forest openings, from middle elevations in the mountains to the subalpine.

Perennial herbs from well-developed, creeping rhizomes, glabrous throughout, the stems clustered, 1-6 dm. tall.

Leaves opposite, sessile, entire, lance-linear or lanceolate, 1.5-5 cm. long and 2-15 mm. wide, with small, interpetiolar stipules.

Inflorescence a terminal, open, several-flowered cyme; calyx with (usually) 4 short teeth; corolla narrowly funnel-shaped, with (usually) 4 spreading, narrow lobes, pink or white, 4-8 mm. long, about the same length as the tube; style exerted, slender, bifid at the tip; ovary 2-celled, inferior.

Fruit oblong, 3-4 mm. long, the 2 segments readily separable.
