Distribution: Occurring west of the Cascades crest in Washington; southwestern British Columbia to California.

Habitat: Wet meadows, wet prairies, shores, swales, and freshwater intertidal marshes.

Flowers: May-August

Description:
General:

Perennial from spreading rhizomes, often also stoloniferous, the stems 4-9 dm. tall.

Leaves:

Leaves alternate, the blades flat, 3-5 mm. broad, one margin turned toward the stem; leaf bases sheathing, not forming auricles.

Flowers:

Inflorescence terminal, large and loose, 15-30 cm. long, much longer than the involucral bract; heads 10-70, 3-12 flowered, 3-6 mm. broad; perianth 3-4 mm. long, the 6 segments greenish-yellow to pale brown, subequal, lanceolate-acuminate; stamens 6, the anthers slightly longer than the filaments; style slender, 1.5-2 mm. long.

Fruits:

Capsule ovoid, tapered to a beak-like tip which slightly exceeds the perianth.
