Heterotextus alpinus (= Guepiniopsis alpina (Tracy & Earle) Brasfield) is known to most spring mushroom-hunters because it is commonly seen then in groups on wet conifer wood. However, it may also occur during other times of the year. The fruitbodies are bright yellow to orange, smooth on top but with a dense covering of hairs externally, small (3--8 mm), cone- to bell-shaped with a depression in the center, and a distinct point of attachment. They often hang like gumdrops from the woody substrate.
