Distribution: On nonnative hardwood trees. Primarily in California, Nevada and Oregon.

Habitat: Oak woodlands, urban trees, both native and nonnative.

Substrate: Hardwoods.

Large fruitbodies, lightly varnished, soft, applanate, yellowish or reddish brown. Very large, rolled, white margin. Concentric growth zones may be present in flesh, which is corky and buff colored. Pores small, round, white. Specimens in Washington are on the roots or butts of dead or live nonnative oaks, sometimes arising from the roots left in the ground after the tree was removed. Larger than G. applanatum and without the pore layer staining; somewhat similar to G. lucidum but stemless and not as varnished, and G. lucidum sensu stricto does not occur in North America outside of cultivation.
