Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in Washington; Washington to California, east to Montana and Nevada.

Habitat: Low plains to open areas in the mountains at moderate elevations.

Perennial herbs from a branched, woody base, glabrous to densely puberulent, the several flowering stems 1-7 dm. tall.

Leaves prominently 3-nerved and white margined; basal leaves linear-oblanceolate to narrowly spatulate, 5-30 cm. long and 5-20 mm. broad; cauline leaves opposite, much reduced upward.

Inflorescence a congested to open, interrupted panicle; calyx divided nearly to the base, the 4 lobes 4-9 mm. long, narrowly ovate to linear-lanceolate; corolla rotate, the tube very short, the 4 lobes 5-11 mm. long, ovate to oblong, pointed, dark bluish to purplish, often darker mottled, rarely white, each lobe with an oblong pit, fringed above; filaments 4, united at the base by crown scales 1-6 mm. long; style slender, much longer than the superior ovary.

Capsule 10-15 mm. long.
