Distribution: Occurring west of the Cascades crest and east in the Columbia River Gorge in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to Idaho, Arizona and New Mexico.

Habitat: Roadsides, fields, ditches, balds, prairies, parks, wastelots, and other disturbed, open areas at low elevations.

Glabrous, glaucous perennial herbs from a deep taproot, the 1-several stems 1-5 dm. tall.

Leaves mostly basal, petiolate, repeatedly ternately divided into linear segments.

Flowers solitary on axillary or terminal, scapose peduncles 6-20 cm. long; receptacle cone-shaped with a spreading outer rim 1-2 mm. wide; sepals 2, coherent into a hood-like structure that is pushed off as the petals open; petals 4, obovate with a wedge-shaped base, 8-40 mm. long, pale yellow to orange; stamens numerous; style absent; stigmas 4, linear, erect.
