Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in Washington; Washington to California, east to the Rocky Mountains.
Habitat: Sagebrush desert to alpine slopes.

Tufted, glabrous perennial from a branched, woody crown, forming mats up to 15 cm. broad, the flowering stems leafy, 1.5-4 dm. tall.
Leaves linear, 1-nerved, 0.5-8 cm. long, the basal ones with bundles of secondary leaves in their axils.
Flowers several to many, usually congested in a head-like cluster, occasionally more open; sepals 5, 1-nerved, broadly scarious-margined, thickened on the back at the base, 3-6 mm. long; petals 5, white, half again as long as the sepals; stamens 10; styles 3.
Capsule equaling the sepals, firm-walled, opening by 6 teeth.
