Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest and in the Columbia River Gorge in Washington; central Washington to southern California, east to Idaho, Nevada, and Utah.

Habitat: Dry, open slopes and flats at lower elevations.

Flowers: May-June

Description:
General:

Slender annual, the stem 1-4 dm. tall, simple or branched; herbage covered with appressed, aligned hairs.

Leaves:

Slender annual, the stem 1-4 dm. tall, simple or branched; herbage covered with appressed, aligned hairs.

Flowers:

Flowers in naked spikes, often two or three spikes on a stem; calyx lobes 5, nearly distinct, 3-4 mm. long, closely enveloping the nutlet, covered below with stout, spreading, curved or hooked bristles; corolla white, the 5 lobes speading, 1-2.5 mm. wide; fornices well-developed; filaments short; style less than half as long as the nutlet.

Fruits:

Nutlet solitary, 2 mm. long, smooth, lanceolate, acuminate.
