Distribution: Occurring west of the Cascades crest and in the Columbia River Gorge in Washington; British Columbia to Oregon.

Herbaceous perennial from thick rhizomes, the erect, hollow stems simple or somewhat branched above, 6-12 dm. tall.

Leaves alternate, cauline, usually 3, near or above the middle of the stem, tri- to quadripinnate, the ultimate segments oblong-elliptic to lanceolate, 2-8 cm. long and 5-25 mm. wide.

Inflorescence of 15- to 35-flowered, compound, terminal racemes; bracts inconspicuous; sepals 2, 1-7 mm. long, ovate to oblong, entire to laciniate; petals 4, pink, 20-30 mm. long, of 2 dissimilar pairs, the upper petal with a spur 12-20 mm. long, narrowed to the tip, the blade of the petal crested above; stamens 6, united into 2 groups alternate with the inner petals; style 1, slender, well-developed; stigma 2-lobed.

Capsule pear-shaped, 10-15 mm. long and 3-4 mm. thick.
