For many years, C. vanduzerensis was called by a European name, C. elatior. When fresh, it has an extremely glutinous cap and stipe. The cap is blackish brown to dark brown at first, then the margin fades to brown or yellow-brown and becomes wrinkled and deeply striate. The gills are pale brownish or rarely slightly lilac or gray tinted, becoming brown and often wrinkled in age. The stipe is cylindrical to slightly spindle-shaped, white to yellowish brown, especially towards the base, and sometimes lilac at the apex, and the veil is typically lilac beneath the gluten. C. vanduzerensis is closely related to C. stillatitius which is found in conifer and sometimes hardwood forests in Europe.
