Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east to Ontario and New Mexico.

Habitat: Dry to somewhat moist, open or lightly shaded areas in the lowlands to moderate elevations in the mountains.

Finely puberulent annual, the usually simple, unbranched stem 1-6 dm. tall, becoming glandular above.

Leaves numerous, alternate, sessile, entire, linear or lanceolate, 1-7 cm. long and 1-13 mm. wide.

Flowers in dense, sessile, leafy-bracteate, terminal clusters on the main stem and branches; calyx 5-lobed, the tube of uniform papery texture, the lobes triangular, herbaceous, 1.5-3 mm. long; corolla pink, or occasionally bluish to white, the slender tube 8-15 mm. long with 5 short lobes; stamens 5, the filaments short, unequally inserted; style 3-parted; ovary superior.

Capsule with 3, 1-seeded carpels.
