Distribution: Occurring east of the Cascades crest in Washington; Washington to California, east through Southern Rockies to Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.
Habitat: Open slopes and rocky bluffs.

Shrub or small tree 4-10 m. tall, the older bark reddish-gray, the young twigs pubescent.
Leaves alternate, short-petiolate, the blades obliquely ovate, acuminate, 3-10 cm. long, serrate, scabrous on both surfaces, but paler and net-veined beneath.
Flowers clustered on short shoots of the current season, the lower ones staminate, several per axil; perianth 5-lobed; stamens 5, opposite the lobes, exerted; upward on the same shoot the flowers perfect, and also a few pistillate, 1-2 per axil; perfect and pistillate flowers with a 5-lobed perianth; pedicles 3-15 mm. long; perianth about 3 mm. long; styles 2, spreading.
Drupe reddish-brown to purple, ellipsoid-globose, 6-8 mm. long, the pulp thin.
