Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the crest in the North Cascades Mountains of Washington; Alaska to Washington, also in Montana

Habitat: Open, rocky areas in the subalpine and alpine.

Low, spreading shrubs, the flowering stems 5-30 cm. tall, the branches puberulent.

Leaves opposite, concealing the stems, 4-ranked, 3-5 mm. long, rather thick, sessile, lanceolate; leaves with prominent dorsal grooves, conspicuously puberulent.

Flowers few, sub-terminal, 4-7 mm. long; pedicels 10-25 mm. long; sepals 5, nearly distinct, reddish, ovate, entire; corolla white, bell-shaped, the 5 lobes ovate, about as long as the tube; stamens 10, included; anthers globose, with recurved awns from the back, opening by false terminal pores; ovary superior.

Fruit a 5-celled, globose capsule.
