Distribution: Occurring in the Cascades and Olympic Mountains of Washington; Alaska to northern California.

Habitat: Moist areas, generally from middle to high elevations in the mountains.

Monoecious trees 20-40 m. tall, with narrow crowns and drooping leaders, the branches tending to droop.

Bark thin, grayish-brown, cinnamon-brown inside, tending to come off in long, narrow strips; wood sulfur-yellow in color.

Leaves malodorous when crushed; leaves opposite, scale-like in 4 rows, bluish-green, pungent, the tips spreading, glandular on the back, the branchlets somewhat flattened.

Staminate cones about 4 mm. long; ovulate cones up to 10 mm. long, globose, brownish and glaucous, the scales with a short point in the center of the peltate
