Distribution: Occurring chiefly east of the Cascades crest in Washington; Yukon Territory to California, east to Montana, Wyoming, and Utah.

Habitat: Sagebrush, ponderosa pine openings, and open slopes at middle elevations.

Flowers: May-August

Description:
General:

Biennial or short-lived perennial from a simple crown, the 1-several stems simple or branched above, glabrous above and variously pubescent below.

Leaves:

Basal leaves several, 1-5.5 cm. long and 2-7 mm. wide, linear-oblanceolate to oblanceolate-spatulate, variously pubescent; cauline leaves alternate, many, the upper sessile and auriculate, the lower petiolate, narrowly oblong to lanceolate, 1-5 cm. long and 2-7 mm. wide, mostly pubescent.

Flowers:

Inflorescence of 20- to 100-flowered, often compound racemes; pedicels 5-15 mm. long, abruptly bent and reflexed at the base; sepals 4, 2.5-5 mm. long; petals 4, pinkish-purple or often white or pink, 5-10 mm. long; stamens 6; style none.

Fruits:

Siliques glabrous, 3-7 cm. long and 1-2 mm. wide, nearly straight, pendant, 1-nerved half their length; seeds in 1 series, 1-1.5 mm. long, with a wing 0.2 mm. broad.
