Description:
General:

Herbaceous perennial, the stem tall and branching.

Leaves:

Leaves mostly basal, reduced upward; leaf blades triternate, dull green, the leaflets with rounded lobes.

Flowers:

Flowers few, large; nodding; sepals 5, petal-like, oblong-lanceolate, slightly drooping, usually violet, but occasionally white or pink, especially in escapes; petals 5, usually violet, the spur strongly hooked; stamens numerous.

Fruits:

Follicles 5.
