Distribution: Occurring west of the Cascades crest in Washington in the coastal counties; Alaska to California, also in eastern North America; Far East Russia.
Habitat: Coastal bluffs, beaches, and estuaries.

Stout perennial 4-14 dm. tall.
Leaves glabrous, the petiole with very broad, sheathing base, or the upper wholly sheath-like; leaf blades ternate-pinnately twice compound; leaflets 3-7 cm. long and 2-6 mm. wide, ovate and serrate.
Compound umbels several, with 20-45 rays up to 10 cm. long; involucre wanting or a few small bracts; involucel of narrow bractlets; calyx obsolete; petals white, glabrous.
Ovary inferior, 2-celled, the stylopodium broadly conic; fruit oblong-elliptic, 4-9 mm. long and 2-5 mm. wide, the ribs all nearly alike, thickened but not winged.
