Distribution: Occurring west of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California.

Habitat: Coastal dunes or sandy bluffs.

Description:
General:

Annual; often bulbous-based; stems decumbent, green or brown, hirsute with hispid hairs; variable branches with stiff calcified or silicified walls.

Leaves:

Leaves basal and cauline, alternate, simple to deeply lobed or compound, green, coarse-hairy to bristly.

Flowers:

Inflorescence a scorpioid cyme, axis coiled but unfurling with floral maturation; calyx lobes number 2 to 3, generally unequal width, not fused above base; corolla 7-15 mm., generally orange or yellow, tube exserted, limb 5-12 mm. diameter.

Fruits:

Nutlets triangular, 1.5-2 mm. long, tubercles sharp or obscure, occasionally ridged.
