Distribution: Occurring on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; Washington to California.

Habitat: Slopes and ridges in the subalpine and alpine.

Herbaceous perennial from a thick root, usually with several simple or freely branched stems, ascending to erect, about 1.5-3.5 dm. tall, more or less reddish-brown throughout.

Leaves numerous, alternate, only slightly reduced upward, short-petiolate, the blade broadly lanceolate to oblong, 2-5 cm. long; sheathing stipules brownish, 5-15 mm. long, not lacerate.

Inflorescence of short, few-flowered racemes in upper leaf axils; perianth greenish-white to pinkish, 3-4 mm. long with a stipe-like base, the 5 segments obovate; stamens 8, on short filaments.

Achene with three sharp angles, yellowish-brown, smooth and shining, about 4 mm. long.
