Distribution: Occurring in scattered locations on both sides of the Cascades crest in Washington; British Columbia to California, east across North America to the Atlantic Coast.

Habitat: Roadsides, fields, wastelots, and other disturbed open places.

Robust annual, the erect, branched stems 0.5-2 m. tall, the herbage soft-hairy throughout.

Leaves alternate, petiolate, rotund and cordate, pointed at the apex, soft.

Flowers solitary in the leaf axils; sepals 5; petals 5, yellow, spreading, broadly obcordate and truncate, clawed, about 1 cm. long; stamens numerous, the filaments united in a tube; ovary superior, up to 3 cm. broad, the 9-15 carpels in a ring around a central axis.

Carpels somewhat flattened, with 3-9 ovoid, rough, gray seeds.
