Distribution: Limited in distribution in Washington to central part of state: southwest Montana and southeast Idaho, south to New Mexico and east to the Dakotas.

Habitat: Sandy soil.

Flowers: June-August

Description:
General:

Herbaceous perennial from a taproot with 1-several erect to decumbent stems up to 1 m. tall, finely glandular-puberulent.

Leaves:

Leaves opposite, entire, rather fleshy, usually glabrous, paler beneath, the blade ovate to triangular or lanceolate, 2-7 cm. long, narrowed abruptly to a short petiole.

Flowers:

Flowers perfect, several in pedunculate heads subtended by 5 whitish, membranous, ovate to broadly lanceolate involucral bracts 8-18 mm. long and 4-12 mm. broad; flowers fragrant; perianth puberulent, with a narrow tube 16-20 mm. long and 5 flaring lobes 7-10 mm. broad, white or pinkish; corolla none; stamens 4-5, included; style 1, included.

Fruits:

Achene 8-10 mm. long, pubescent, tapered at both ends or truncate at the top, wingless, or with 4-5 thick, hollow wings not as wide as the body.
